Would you like to travel back in time to ancient Japan? William Adams, a British navigator, was the first of his nation to set foot in Japan, alighted here in Usuki in 1600, possibly being the first western samurai. Usuki located in the east coast of Oita Prefecture, Kyushu the southwest of Japan’s main islands, is famous for the National Treasure Stone Buddha and the old castle town. The town took shape approximately 450 years ago and has preserved well. You will be given unforgettable experiences of feeling calm by the authentic atmosphere in Usuki such as praying Buddha led by the priests, strolling around in the aesthetically spectacular samurai neighborhood, stopping by the quiet and elegant temples, tasting sake with a little tipple and the finest rice incense in the traditional-style white-walled storehouses, and touching the texture of papier-mâché of a lucky Daruma charm.

National treasure Usuki Stone Buddha and the Buddhist ceremony

Experience Calm! The tour will allow you to pray for good luck and peace led by the local priests.

The Usuki Stone Buddha is a set of beautiful images carved from hardened volcanic ash and molten rock erupted from Mt. Aso approximately 90,000 years ago. 61 statues have been designated as National Treasure. They have gained international recognition as cultural heritage in light of the numbers of figures, their beauty, and remarkable carving techniques. The research has revealed that they were created in late 12c – early 14c, but so much still remains a mystery – even who created them and for what purpose. While Buddhist ceremony is normally conducted only three times per year (in January, May, and September), it will be specially delivered by the local monks in order for the tour participants to obtain Japanese cultural experience as well as pray for good luck and peace.

The Old Castle Town

Experience Calm! The tour will provide unique views and opportunities in the old castle town including: (left) temple visits, with a temple scarlet seal given (centre) high street in the Usuki Castle town, with the city’s mascot ‘Hotto-san’, a cute stone Buddha cartoon character. (right) local sake tastings in the 150-year building.

The old town is located in the heart of Usuki city, characterized by its stone paved alleys lined by traditional buildings. You will be immersed in the enchanting authentic atmosphere by seeing vestiges of the former castle town such as samurai neighborhood, tall stone walls, bright and white walls, and historical temples. The tour allows you to know traditional architecture and people’s way of living as well as local cultural experiences. You will receive a temple scarlet seal, which includes the name of the temple in scarlet ink and the principal object of worship written in black ink that can be collected as a sign of visiting. The tour will end with sake tastings in long-established local breweries, for Usuki is famous for its brewing industry such as sake, shochu (distilled liquor), and fruit wine.

Footpath experience in the old castle town

Originated from the right-of-way on the public footpaths in UK, Usuki has developed some footpath courses as new resources for local vitalization. This is an easy flat walk of about 2.5km (=1.6 mile) in the Usuki castle town. The route offers some splendid atmospheres and views of the castle town and the chance to visit a temple and a shrine. The route is mostly level, with narrow and beautiful walkways. The route offers some splendid atmospheres and views of the castle town and the chance to visit a temple and a shrine.
